Light is broken (unusually dark shadows)

I'm loading the world for 1.9.0.2 beta but still generated 9 chunks. In results after loading world, these lighting parts of the world are unfortunately broken.

To users searching for this bug

There are 4 unrelated bugs having similar symptoms of dark shadows:

  • This bug causes unusually dark but still gradual shadows. It can be worked around by momentarily placing a torch or other light source in the shadowed area, or by any action that would cause a lighting update such as breaking blocks above the shadow to expose it to the sky light.

  • MCPE-39368 describes a bug that causes fully black shadows with sharp edges, even right next to a light source. Placing a torch does not correct this problem.

  • MCPE-58182 describes light not being updated properly across chunk and sub-chunk borders when areas are reloaded. Placing a light source does correct this problem.

  • MCPE-69037 describes the entire world being dark or hazy after return from the nether or end, and light source blocks being the only blocks that are lit, with no light spreading from them.

My CPU is Mali-400 and this bug also occurs

chickensoup

i've had this for the last couple of betas (currently 1.9.5). if I unload chunks by going to a different area then go back to it the black shadows will be there. they go by placing a light source. if I go to a different area, shadows again. it only appears to be happening in places where I have build something. I dont think it affects naturally generated places where I haven't placed a block

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is unaffected

This issue appears to be fixed in 1.10.0.3

Are those bugs reported to Minecraft java Edition also? bcs it happens there too (1.14 snapshots)

migrated

This bug strikes again not dark shadows but difference in light levels. Happening at the same place everytime I load the world. Since 1.14.0.6

migrated

Chunk borders and sub chunk borders don't transfer light level sometimes.
If you go in an ocean and place a sealantern at y=64.
Unload the chunk reload it, the top face of the sea lantern will have light level = 0

And mobs will spawn on them.

I've only noticed this since 1.13, so it may be another bug.

GoldenHelmet

MCPE-58182 seems to describe the same issue since 1.13.

Update April 22, 2020: Looking at the pictures on this report again, I think it's a different issue. The shadows in the first picture on this report are not on chunk borders, they are on blocks that do not have sky access. The issue in 1.13 and 1.14 is clearly light not updating across chunk and subchunk borders.

migrated

This issue also appears in the Nintendo Switch version of Minecraft bedrock edition and is not limited to phones. This effects latest release and previous releases on Switch and I was in hope that someone else would mention it. Breaking blocks can fix the issue on switch and issue can happen often when close to light sources. The issue on switch also is not nearly as dramatic as can be seen in the images.

@Joshua, @Natan Vieira dos Santos, @HostingFun
Could you provide pictures/videos of this bug happening in the current release version or beta version? The most recent duplicate tickets reporting this issue are from 1.9 beta versions. Also, the 1.10 changelog reports that a lighting issue was fixed (no specific ticket is cited). I want to be sure what you are experiencing is not actually MCPE-58182, which is a distinct lighting bug that began in 1.13.

migrated

We have confirmed that this bug is happening something in my world with 14-16 chunks for Android. Please, add a vote for information, if you want to be fixed the lighting bug in future betas.

@[Helper] GoldenHelment
I can get you images but it may take a week, I have to retrieve by taking out the micro SD card and putting it into a reader to get the images. That is cause the bug is happening on the Switch console, it would be easier if it were happening on my computer however it is not, which means it will take time. It's actually why I did not originally intend on attaching any, but I understand that proof is needed. I'll have it up as long as I remember, in a week or two.

GoldenHelmet

@Joshua whenever you can get images, they will be helpful.

@@unknown Please do not post the same picture on every lighting bug ticket. Your picture does not look like the description and original pictures on this ticket. I think you are experiencing MCPE-69037.

I went back to grab those images, however when attempting to re-animate the same results to assure the issue was not fixed, the results of the shadow glitch that occurred before did not appear when attempting to re-animate the same issue. I have images however the bug seems to have not appeared in the month of June as it did in the month of April when I spotted it first. It seems to of fixed itself in the Switch edition and no longer occurring. My guess would be that the shadows were not loading properly and now they are. Likely the system was registering light sources that were not there, and the chunk that was registering a light source showed light while the chunk next to the broken chunk was registering light properly therefore creating the illusion of a dark shadow against an illuminated chunk. This would in that case not of been a programing error rather than the system simply working as intended and making a mistake when running through the system of logic. After all machines are never perfect.

I was playing and went to the Nether and back (after the Nether Update). This happened

Once I broke the torches and placed them again, it was fixed.

GoldenHelmet

@@unknown: that's MCPE-69037, where the torch block is the only one with light.

I have the same thing too. And placing tbe  torch tends to fix the bug, but removing it reproduces it.

When I went to the Overworld from Nether, I'm going to sleep and it's happening that light is broken.

migrated

Hi I am experiencing similar shadow glitches that are presented on this page in latest update 1.16.10 and their is evidence that anti-aliasing is not attaching itself to blocks and lights not being effected by blocks being place in front. This is happening on my Nintendo Switch and PC with RTX 2060. Sometimes placing torch fixes other times breaking blocks fixes, however both do not work 100% of the time. Light appears to not be effected by the blocks surrounding it and still shines with the same radius as before.

@unknown: I am redacting the parts of your comment because it is partly not about this bug and partly requesting a feature. Please make your feature requests on the Feedback site (link below).

As for the rest, please limit comments to new facts that might help the developers find and fix the problem. Extended speculation about what might be causing the bug is generally just distracting.

Auldrick: Hi I understand what you are saying. The only thing I like to mention is that the extended speculation was pointed towards a root cause which could give the solution to the bug and fix all of your problems. Especially if you keep backups for your code in case an issue like a returning bug re-appears. Thanks for the quick response it is nice to see work happening.

Auldrick

As clarification, I think you have a common but incorrect understanding of what the bug tracker is and who its staff are. We are not Mojang or Microsoft employees, we're community volunteers. Our purpose is to gather and organize bug reports, try to make them reproducible, and forward the report with our findings to the developers. So it's only "my code" or "our code" to the extent that it's all of our code, the code which the whole Minecraft community shares an interest in.

Also, the Bedrock developers have their own internal bug tracking system which we don't have access to, so we have no information about what they're working on or what's been done and we can't answer any questions like that (and it wouldn't be appropriate anyway, since we don't work for Mojang). Mojira is called a "bug tracker" because it's actually used that way on the Java side, but the Bedrock team has a different set of tools and different workflows.

Affects: 1.16.200.55 Beta

GoldenHelmet

This bug has come back in 1.17.40.23 beta according to MCPE-143261.

What most of the screenshots show is simply that skylight is not spreading horizontally, e.g. into areas underneath trees, roofs, and overhangs. The gradual part of the shadows is just smooth lighting interpolating between blocks with high light level and blocks with 0 light.

migrated

With respect to the problem in beta 1.17.40.23 (Android), the  bug is best described as No. 1 of the 4 variants in the message above.  Changing the configuration of the shadowed area by placing a block or changing the light source (eg. removing a torch) normalizes the illumination in the immediate affected area (such as under one group of trees).  However, the problem returns in the next morning.

Screenshots repeated here.  I removed a torch in the indoor one to normalize the lights.

Note: In MCPE-143261 another user asked about use of resource packs or extremely idiosyncratic lighting settings.  No resource packs were active, and the lighting was set to 75 for the screenshots.  I usually play with lighting at 50, but tried increasing it up to 100 with no change in the differential illumination.

I can confirm this is the case for me after updating to 1.17.40.23 on Windows 10, placing light sources does not resolve the issue

Auldrick

@unknown: Please explain what you mean by "lighting set to 75" etc. What setting are you talking about? I could assume you mean the Brightness slider, but it's best to be unambiguous because ambiguity can lead to everybody having different interpretations.

migrated

@Auldrick: The "Brightness" slider (0 - 100) at the top of the "video" tab in Settings, as you surmised.

I used the wrong term as I was writing from memory.  My apologies.

migrated

I was exploring one of the new caves and marked my way with torches. When I came back all of the area was dark. Placing or breaking blocks didn't update the light for me. You have to either break a torch or place a new one to normalize it.

[media]
migrated

I can say, that in Xbox, when I am in the cave, this happens:

Amount of torches

How the light acts

1

Light drops level (7-4)

When you place torch near placed torch

Works as intended (Light is in default condition)

migrated

@unknown: What happens when you remove the additional torch?  Does the light level drop again, or does it stay at the expected level?

My experience on Android was that the lighting remained normal after removing a second torch (in the immediate area - other affected areas remain unchanged and the bug returns after sleeping, nether portal travel and quitting/reentering the world)

Reason for my asking is that the Android and Xbox/PC betas are no longer completely identical, so bugs may present differently.

migrated

I don't know but I think, that happened to me (additional torch removed), and it returned.

GoldenHelmet

Reverted change to the report the summary. This issue is not related to chunk borders.

This is still an issue in 1.19.30

fragilerock

This started happening to our Realms world after the 1.19.30 update.

migrated

This issue started for me after the 1.19.30.04 BDS update, but does not occur when I move the BDS world to single-player, so it is related to the BDS software in my case. There needs to be a way to update and clear cache for Bedrock worlds like in Java. I've had so many problems with Bedrock in the last two years, Microsoft should not market Bedrock as their primary platform when it is broken and buggy.

Auldrick

@unknown: Please explain exactly what you mean by "move the BDS world to single-player". Also, does placing a torch within the shadow have any effect? Also also, the only picture you succeeded in uploading does not show a lighting bug. Please explain.

migrated

Thank you for your time! I moved my saved world from my BDS server to a PC and opened it as a single-player offline game. When doing this I cannot reproduce the issue, but moving the world back to the server causes the issue to come back. The issue is the same as above, dark shadows everywhere with a gradient on some edges, that go away if you place or remove a block. I cannot upload the second image, even after resizing, but please take a look at my original post MCPE-162513

Hippie459MN

I am also having this issue. I updated my Windows sever to 1.19.30.04 and now I get hard shadows and I have to place a torch and it gets rid of the darkness/hard shadows. This was not an issue until I updated the server and it is very annoying. Some areas in the open the placing and removing a block fixed the lighting issue but if I leave the server and come back, the issue is present again.  Here is a video of the issue I am having. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wR-lLwgZ0uQ

Auldrick

@unknown: It sounds like you can recreate the flaw by saving the world and loading it again, right? If so, it would be really helpful if you are willing and able to give us a copy of the world. If it's 10 MB or less, you can upload it here as an attachment. Otherwise, you could upload an non-editable copy to a file sharing service (OneDrive, for example) and give us a link.

Also, please tell us whether what you're describing as a "Windows server" is the BDS (Bedrock Dedicated Server) or just the retail version.

migrated

I should have mentioned my BDS server is on Ununtu.

migrated

Have same issue on Realms, 1.19.30. I'd download the world but it's 300Mb+. Here is a screen shot. This is all over the map as well. New areas that have never been loaded, and current areas. Laying down a light block does not change the effect, and even the light block itself is blacked out. As you can see, my character is also a blacked out when in the middle of a dark area. If I quit the game session form there and go back in, the black area immediately where I am at will partially restore, but further out areas within view do not.
Downloading and running the world locally does not appear to have these shading issues. I did not travel thousands of blocks; however, the immediate area I am in on the Realm is affected by the bug.

migrated

It happens in my Realm only, if I exit and then enter it disappear, but appear in another place.

If I remove the resource pack, it also happens.

Video showing the bug:

It also happens with new worlds.

Please do not add "me too" comments. Comments should be used only to provide new, additional information that could help the developers understand and fix the problem. Instead of a "me too" comment, vote for the report and, if you like, watch it using the controls above.

It appears that the recent reports are a new bug (or a regression of one of the older bugs that were fixed). We may want to create a new report for it as it relates to Realms, so I would suggest watching this report so that if we split the new issue into its own report, you might want to watch that one.

migrated

Please see above. The issue effects Windows and Linux BDS software, including Realms. I have already made a new big report that mentioned it does not effect single-player modes, but it was closed as a duplicate.

Reply from @unknown:
Yes, thank you for reminding me. There have been several "duplicate" reports lately, and we may decide to use one of them to track this presumably new problem, or we may decide to create a new report that combines them for the devs. Stay tuned.

jblackburn

I have experience the "new" lighting bug as described above and shown by the screen shots, however another player on the same realm (same/pretty similar locations) is also seeing the "unloaded chunks" (but did not mention the "dark patches") issue which appear to be tracked via MCPE-162424. Not sure if these two issues are linked (or not)

migrated

Heyo.
Having the same issue since latest version of realms. 1.19.30.
Was wondering if downloading the world to single player, then reuploading to the realm solves this issue?

Edit: Attempted this. Did not solve issue.
