Higher rate of Unloaded chunks since 1.19.30

Immediately upon updating to 1.19.30, elytra flight results in a much higher rate of unloaded chunks than before. When flying at normal speeds, chunks that have been previously loaded in will cease to load in, resulting in the world past a certain point being completely invisible. If I stand where it is invisible, perhaps 10-15 seconds will elapse (sometimes more), at which point the chunks load and I will take significant damage. This is on realms.

This goes for the 3 dimensions: Overworld, Nether and End.

And this has been happening since 19.1.22 , only I thought it was my device, but I realized that it also affects Minecraft Bedrock for windows, Then I realized it was a bug.

I've been experiencing this on my Ps4 console. It's soo annoying to log in your world, and every chunk becomes transparent. So for me to fix this, is to close the application, and try again. If it continues, reset the console.

I've never really experienced this on my pc, but when I go on Ps4, it's soo annoying

Confirmed, I am having this issue as well. Does not require elytra flight, there are huge issues with chunk loading when logging in or changing dimensions, with chunks not loading, light levels not being set, and maps being corrupted. Related to MCPE-162421 (Maps display black areas).

My primary system is a Razer Blade 15 with NVidia RTX2060, 16GB RAM, and Intel Core i7-9750H @ 2.60 GHz. Chunks are loading erratically, particularly immediately after spawning in to the server. There is also greatly increased "lag" with stuttering animations, stop-start movement, and generally a lack of smooth performance. See attached video.

this os from my friends realm and this hasnt been an issue at all until 1.19.30

Same with my friends and I playing on a Realms. He is playing on mobile and I am on both Windows 10 edition and Pocket Edition. Maps continue to bug and display black circles no matter how many times you fix them. Extreme lag due to chunks loading very slow and causes the game to be almost unplayable. Unloaded chunks cause a lot of xray. Even the sky sometimes doesn't load correctly.

Same on BDS after updating to latest version

Maybe the fix of MCPE-105487 changed something about the management of memory and caused this issue.

Joining the world even the chunk I'm standing in will not load sometimes, or a chunk I'm standing next to. Disconnecting and reconnecting to my server doesn't always help right away. Flying with my elytra guarantees I will hit an unloaded chunk and fall out of the sky pretty quick. Usually it will fix itself after a few minutes.

It seems the performance issues are affecting people in different ways.

Some people are having lag, some are seeing issues with chunks, some people are even crashing upon launch. Rather annoying.

migrated

Same here: Multiple iPads connected to bedrock server are having the same issue as reported above....

Bedrock server, linux.  iPad clients, some Pros, some Airs.

The main problem: Chunks do not load, on first world load.   Strangely, re-opening the client app completely (ipad task manager, swipe up on app to exit) will fix the chunks and the game then runs fine.  In a small number of cases a third load is required before the world runs properly.

Also related?

  • players have died entering the world (suffocation, I think).  Seems to be related since the chunk is not loaded in all cases

  • players device have locked up going through netherportal (during "building terrain" step, I think).  Maybe related?

This issue only started in 1.19.30.  Our world was started in 1.18 so it's been through a few upgrades in 2022.

Possibly related to MCPE-40976?

This bug started to happening a lot to me and many other players on the server after 1.19.30 update. I happens even to people with high-end PCs.
After loading world or moving through dimensions, chunks around stay not loaded for seconds to minute, you can see through them into the caves or structures, mobs in these chunks are blackened. You can not enter such a chunk, it acts like solid blocks. And sometimes the chunk you located in is unloaded, you can not move/jump until it loads up.
I had multiple episodes of loading through the portal, appear in the "void" of unloaded chunk, looking through the terrain and unable to move. Sometimes chunk load quickly, but more often then not you just stuck in the portal frame unable to move for so long, it sends you back through the portal.

I have also experienced possibly related bug mentioned in the comment above - getting stuck in the nether portal on the "Building Terrain" screen forever. The only option to close game or minimize it to get kicked out of the server. After further log in game respawns you high above ground in random location around world spawn, one player on the server had died by fall damage experiencing this issue, players who had Feather Falling enchantment had survived but took damage. [This happen to me twice in one day after I increased the render distance from 24 to 32 that is above recommended by game, 2 other player experienced it and one of them died as a result].And in general after .30 update all players on the server complaining of much longer loading time after going through the portals (possibly because of this chunk loading bug).

Here is few screenshots added as examples.

Mojang, any word on this?

It's been over a week, and I've got 6 players who are afraid to log into a Realm because they don't know if this will corrupt their builds, and two players afraid to log into a second Realm because they are afraid the related MCPE-162421 will corrupt their map art. Even just an update letting us know this is client-side and not a danger to our Realm generally would be appreciated!

Hey,

I would like to see an update on this problem also.
I have a heavy high end-pc and minecraft runs smooth in single player. But the realm is a drama (sometimes).

We are with 5-6 players on this realm and we all have problems with chuncks not loading or loading extreem slow. MC 1.18 or lower hardly had this problem.
Also some of the people experience lag, some more then others. And yes, they also have good internet and pc's. Good enough for MC. I do notice when i play alone on the server, it goes way faster, but still. A realm is ment for 10 players max, so if 5-6 people are on at the same time, i expect it to still load fast enough for people to be able to play normal. I understand more players = slower, but chuncks not loading at all is bad.  Some people lost stuf becasuse of this.

So Mojang, could you pls drop a update how things are going? Seeing the ticket status you did not even start working on this 😞

It’s not just realms, I have a dedicated server on my LAN and it’s still awful. It significantly degrades the experience.

Mineliver

This is happing on my pc too, and of course, I'm receiving lower fps too.

NeoCyania

Same issue on local worlds. Chunks load very slow sometimes, mobs begin to move in slow motion and freeze every few seconds. In some worlds it happens more and in some less, unrelated to the amount of mobs or anything. I play on Windows 10 and never had lag issues before.

migrated

The slowness is not only impacting the player whose chunk is being loaded. but the entire server is impacted that makes the lag very bad and the activity on community realms have been severely impacted as some people can't bare the amount of lag.

migrated

This is also happening on my Nintendo Switch.
It's happening in single player mode.
I lost my Shulker Box because of this, and I also lost the enchanted weapons, armor, and other items in the box...

Farmers and Minecart with Hopper also disappeared...
I think it's a very serious problem, so I would like to know the current status of the investigation.
After the 1.19.30 update, I can't enjoy it at all...

migrated

We are seeing this behavior after 1.19.30 update on both iOS and Xbox One on the same realms server. I also experienced the issue on a local world.

Reinstalled the game on the Xbox, no change.

migrated

Hi, I would like to follow-up on this as well. I've died thrice now due to suffocating on walls my items disappeard upon death and I have needed to "cheat" and load a backup of the world because I just find it an unfair death. I am terrified of riding my railway cross the nether for fear of falling into lava. Bees have also despawned, although I'm not sure if that's due to the lag. Any update would be much appreciated.

migrated

Have 1.18.31 hotfix fixed this issue or improved the chunk loading speed?

migrated

Still affects 1.19.31 on my iPad Pro.

Note it's NOT that the chunks are not loading; they ARE loading and simulating. At my zombie farm I can see them spawn from the invisible spawner, float through space as they are pushed by the invisible water stream across the invisible floor into the invisible kill chamber where the visible trident, also seemingly floating in space, kills them.

Also I can look down into the "unloaded chunks" and see the floor of the mega cave below my base; again if the chunk were not loaded, that wouldn't happen. Vertical sections of the chunks are not rendering but they are clearly simulating because while player movement is FUBAR in these areas, mobs and other entities seem unaffected and are visible even in the problem areas.

None of this would happen if the chunk were completely unloaded. Chunks are vertically unbounded; they include everything from the bottom of the world to the top. No part of a chunk would be visible or simulating if the chunk were not loaded.

migrated

I play 1.19.31 on Nintendo Switch in a Realm (mine) and am not having this issue at all, which is funny, because I usually have performance issues (just in general, not for specifically Minecraft or anything) on Nintendo Switch. Is it possible this bug doesn't apply to the host of the realm?

I'm really experiencing none of this, no unloaded chunks at all, no lag, or anything. (Although I have seen the black parts on maps, but that sounds like it may be a separate bug)

I think the game is forgetting all of the textures, causing it to take a while to load chunks/dimensions, causing lag, and making black spots on maps. I am fairly sure the things other people are seeing (again, I'm not getting this lag) began when fixing the pink textures, because the game forgot about the textures that were no longer needed, which makes sense, but it also forgot about the ones still in use, so the game has to load it again. I hope that makes sense because it was a total run-on sentence.

migrated

Just to reiterate, I don't think this is a chunk loading problem, it's a rendering problem. I am seeing some of the blocks and all of the entities render in the affected areas, redstone contraptions function, and physics are simulated, even if it looks like the entities are floating on air. None of that would happen if the chunk were not loaded. So it seems to be the blocks and light sources in vertical sub-chunk columns are experiencing unusual rendering lag.

migrated

Same thing happened to me on Switch, the reason I cant use elytras is because chunks cant load very fast.

migrated

How many of you are still experiencing these bugs and glitches? Mojang released their 1.19.40 update yesterday and after I installed it, I'm not seeing the problems I reported in my bug. I didn't see anything in the release notes related to this bug, but it is possible that some of this issue has been fixed.

migrated

After updating to 1.19.30 I started to suffer the things described in this issue (and others), slow rendering of chunks (to the point of travelling so fast the game was not able to keep that pace and the game stopping until recovers) but entities moving like if the chunk were properly loaded, everything transparent the first few seconds after logging in a world and even hanging once or twice in the loading screen when entering the nether (after the first time this happened, I avoided going other dimensions completely)

Right now, after updating to 1.19.40, everything seems to run much better, not only these problems have dissapeared but the game feels smoother than before. I did not realised about this until updating to 1.19.40

My setup is PS5 + bedrock server in 4gb VM on a Ryzen 7 2700

migrated

Single-player mode on Nintendo Switch hasn't improved. . .

The elytra flight hit an invisible wall after about 200 squares, and the world was covered in light blue, and there was about 20 seconds of no block drawing.
When returning from the Nether to the Overworld, the world was covered in black and there was about 20 seconds of no block rendering.

(Torches and nether portal particles were visible.)
It gets worse during rain and auto-saving.

Is it a problem with the Nintendo Switch itself and is there nothing I can do about it? ・・・

migrated

After updating to 1.19.40, the unloaded chunks issue appears to be resolved for us on all affected iPads (some ipad pros, some standard ipads) - thanks team

migrated

For those who are still having issues, are you using things like texture packs or other behavior packs? I can see at least one player in the attachments using texture packs, and another seems to be in a public server. Both of those players could be experiencing something caused by lag in the server or the game struggling to load those specific textures. Again, I'm not experiencing any of these issues, so I'm assuming other players' issues are coming from something else. (Especially since @per48r said it has been fixed for them)

EDIT: Actually, I think I am experiencing this issue a bit, but only over oceans...

Any fast method of travel over ocean can cause it, whether by boat, with an elytra, etc

migrated

If my understanding of this issue is correctly, then yes. I am still experiencing this issue single player on Nintendo Switch. (Single player with no mods or texture packs.) It happened yesterday when riding my minecart across the world. (I hit an invisible wall in the first few seconds of the attached video.)

I've noticed that it tends to happen near water such as a river or ocean biomes. (Boating across an ocean triggers this pretty much every time.)

I noticed this issue when I updated to 1.19.50, thought my realm was corrupting so this is relieving.

108CAM

I play MC on a gaming computer with a Geforce RTX and ever since the 1.19.51 Hotfix Update, I've noticed a fairly large drop in performance and framerate.

The main issue that I'm facing is randomly getting kicked due to lag spikes.

I've never had an issue with unloaded chunks or pink blocks although I've had a few instances of blocks appearing black and shadows that are much darker than they should be.

I believe that these performance issues are coming from the server that is used to host the Realms service and provide cloud based storage for the world files and their backups. I'm thinking that this server is beginning to run low on memory and is struggling to handle the amount of traffic and as a result, in-game performance begins to drop and issues start appearing within the game, eg. the lag spikes that result in me getting kicked.

migrated

This appears to be a client-side issue rather than a typical server performance/chunk-loading issue. I can easily replicate this bug on both my personal Bedrock 1.19.51 server (Ryzen 3600 12-core, 32GB RAM, 1TB NVMe) and multiple Realms, but only when playing on Nintendo Switch or Android phone (Pixel 5a). If I play on those same Realms or my personal server from a decent PC (different Ryzen 3600 with RX580 8GB) I have no issues.

NeoCyania

I get this bug too on my pc with decent specs. Something like that does not happen when I play on Java edtion. I notice it are often the SAME chunks in my world that take longer to load than the rest, notably chunks in my storage room that contain lots of entities/barrels items. Said chunks can take 10 seconds or more to render while I'm standing right in front of them and the game keeps loading chunks very far away in the distance instead of the one next to me. It is a locally saved world on my pc. Does the game have no priority to load chunks close to the player first instead of the ones super far away? What could be the reason for specific chunks to take so long to render?

migrated

Ipad pro 2021, iOS 16, Minecraft 1.19.60, still affected. Chunks randomly don’t load or don’t render, sometimes for minutes at a time. Flying with elytra  it is impossible to avoid hitting the edge of the world and falling out of the sky. Changing the rendering distance has no effect.

I noted recently that the impact is worse when playing single-player. When I play on my lan-hosted dedicated server I am able to keep flying past the edge of the world without falling, and the chunk loading/rendering eventually catches up.

Interestingly I see this effect very clearly when making level 4 maps with my elytra. In single player the map generation keeps pausing with random black squares. Over the LAN map generation works perfectly normally and doesn’t lag at all, even when chunk loading/rendering does.

Chunk loading speed seems a LOT faster in 1.20.0.23

MAlpha1

Playing on ps4. Older world. The only safe place to fly is somewhere you have explored.
Death will come trying to explore new chunks.

Can confirm on MC 1.20.0. Both on Realms and personal worlds.

migrated

I play on a survival realm on my iPad 8, and this issue has only gotten worse for us. Even walking at an average speed can cause massive amounts of unloaded chunks that take minutes to load. The problem is worse in the rain.

There wasn't anything wrong until last year (2022); even then, it was manageable. But since then, it has only gotten worse. The errors have become more frequent and take longer to load than a year ago.
