Upon my untimely death via wither skeletons, my items were deleted before the 5-minute timer. Dropped items still existed less than 10 blocks away

I was killed by about 6 wither skeletons in a nether fortress. When I came back there was nothing but piglins and the skeletons had despawned witch wouldn't happen if they were holding my items

Was there any fire or lava nearby? Fire and lava destroy items.

Nope. I was in the fortress surrounded by nether brick. No items touched lava. I've been playing this game for years and have never had an issue like this
