after trapping a zombie village to try and cure it, the villager disappears by the time i come back to is location, which is very close to my current location, currently i do have one zombie villager trap, but after 4 attempts to secure another to cure is disspears.

Yes. The same happened to me on iOS 1.16. Trapped a zombie villager very close to my hut, turned around to get the apple etc. turned back and it had gone. Whether this is the same as other mobs despawning I don’t know but this was not connected to a crash and the nether had not been entered.
If you only trapped the zombie villager and did not name-tag it, it will not be persistent and has a chance of despawning at any time once you are 32 blocks away. You can read about current despawning mechanics on the wiki or the 1.16.0 changelog.
