Mob Spawn rate too high in overworld even spawn on lit blocks

Mobs spawn in every slightly unlit block even on lit blocks also. They spawn literally every where especially creepers which makes it almost impossible to keep a mob free base because they spawn even on well lit places.

How to reproduce:

  1. flat area like plains biome or village

  2. light it up

  3. see that mobs spawn everywhere and too often

I have also noticed this problem on my server.  It's not just mobs.  Animals have also been spawning in doubles and triples.  We've witnessed all types of mobs spawn in overworld in double and triple.  We've also had issues with keeping mobs out of our base.  Additionally, Creepers have come up to doors that are RIGHT NEXT to cats (which are also outdoors).

Are you sure everything is light up correctly - no places with light level 7 or below?

At first I thought they were spawning in the scaffolding, so I closed them up and added doors, but mobs were STILL spawning.   In past versions of the game, I wouldn't be having this problem.  Also, mobs are spawning in Duplicate and Triplicate.

You need more lights. Placing torches 4 or 5 blocks above floor level greatly reduce range they light up. Remember that light level goes down by 1 for every cardinal block away from torch - including down. For example place creeper is on second screenshot is clearly not light up enough.

I lit up every space that looks dark to the point where the village looks ugly but stuff literally spawns on torches and lit up blocks. the mobs spawn in big groups as well

I have a 5 x 5 grid of torches around my base. Before the update I had no mobs spawning due to the acceptable light levels, however in 1.16 mobs, especially creepers, spawn randomly. One even spawned right next to a torch. There was no time to screenshot! The rate of creepers spawning is also extremely overwhelming! In my realm we play on "normal" setting, but these days I turned it to "easy"... even now still, the creeper spawn rate on easy, is just too high.

My friends and I experienced this yesterday. We kept trying to put up torches and mobs continually spawn. Never had this problem when we played before.

To address what some commenters here have said about group spawns and spawn rate:

  • it is part of the game that monsters spawn in "herds" of random size with a set range. Zombies, for example, spawn in groups of 1-4.

  • Difficulty level does not affect the spawn rate or cap.

The pictures a provided by — show areas that are not adequately lit to prevent spawns.

The reason you did not have so many spawns in previous versions is that it was common for the monster caps to be filled by monsters hidden in small, inaccessible caves or pools of water. The chance of this happening would increase as you spent time in an area, for example building a base or exploring and lighting the visible caves. With the new despawning system in 1.16, the hidden monsters are now able to despawn regularly, so new ones can spawn in other places. Monsters should now regularly respawn on full blocks in places you have already visited but have not fully lit.

Keep in mind that torches have a light level of 14, monsters spawn in in light level 7 and below, and spawning is based on the light level of the space just above the ground/floor. You may find it helpful to temporarily turn off smooth lighting (in video settings) to see how the light levels change block by block. For more information on calculating light levels see the Minecraft wiki.
