When you place a dry sponge in the edge of the sand in the water in the desert, they start repeatedly drying out of water instantly and keep drying out water.
It is unknown why it happens.

Confirmed and attached video from duplicate report MCPE-66407.
I had this problem too, and it was in a desert biome. I hope this gets fixed because it causes my game to lag, and it makes a really annoying noise!
Something about it feels out of place. Maybe because the mechanic is inconsistent. Wet sponges dry up slowly. But if a dry sponge becomes wet, it instantly dries. Shouldn't wet sponges react the same way in the same biome? Either it instantly dries up or it dries slowly. Or doesn't dry at all, as I think this is the case with Java.
This still happens in 1.18.12.
I have attached a link to the video I took.

Sponges dry out when placed in hot biomes. Once dry, they can remove the flowing water that is coming back toward them from the pool or river or ocean that they partially cleared. Amusing, but it makes sense to me and I’m not sure it’s really a bug.
