You haven't told us the steps you went through to set up your Realm world, but from the way you've described the problem I suspect you're misunderstanding how Realms is supposed to work.
It kind of sounds like you expected Realms to make the world stored on your Xbox available to your friends, as if it were just a network. That's not quite right. Realms is a server. It's like a separate computer that you rent via your subscription. It runs its own special version of Minecraft, and it stores its own worlds. You can upload and download worlds to/from Realms, but the world you and your friends play together will always be the copy on your Realm.
You can upload a copy of your world in two ways:
In the Settings for your Realm world (in the Realms section of the world list), use the Replace World button to upload the world you want to copy to the Realm, or
Open the Settings for the world you want to upload, click the Play on Realms button, and select your current Realm from the list. (You could also click one of the other buttons to purchase an additional Realm subscription.)
Either way, the game will ask you to confirm that you want to overwrite your current Realm world.

About how old is the world you tried to upload? Did it originate on the original "Xbox One Edition"?
