The permissions workaround above also solved this on all four of my kids' Kindles!
However, there still seems to be a partial issue of saving data. Worlds can now be created, and they can join each other's worlds. So all is good there.
Character appearance customizations do not save though. Every time they open the game, they are back to either a generic Steve or Alex. The name they set in their own profiles is still there, but character appearance customization is done separately from changing the character name. It's that appearance customization that is not saving, so they're stuck either playing as Steve or Alex (three of the Kindles always start as Alex, one always starts as Steve...) or they have to re-change their appearance every time.
This was happening at the same time as MCPE-112712, which did get linked to another issue with a workaround listed. That workaround also resolved this issue. So for now, this issue is "resolved", though a fix to correct permissions so the workaround isn't needed would be great.
Thank you! That did partially resolve it. I'll post some details of what I'm still seeing in the linked issue.
Also, changing the permissions caused three Kindles to immediately work. The fourth required a restart of the device before it started working.
