Yes it needs to check for lava flowing around the portal !
I have one instance where the portal appeared in a lava flow going past both sides of it !
If it were not for appearing inside the portal, I would have roasted !
The one instance I really liked was a portal was created with a cobble base on both sides and was set on top of the netherrack !
I have never had that happen since - I believe that was in version 1.8.1.
IMHO they need to quit assassinating peoples players/HC games, roll it back like it was, Spawning inside the portal !
Then they should play with their code on a closed private server (with massive testing) till they get it right ! -Then maybe put it in ! OR NOT !
As you can see by my 006 pic above (attached to NOTHING) it is no fun dropping 30+ blocks into an ocean of lava to die and lose all your inventory !
I resorted to potions to get back up there and build the office around it when I discovered I was only about 120+ blocks away from a nether castle !
I have a few portals filled with blocks of coal that I avoid using due to this issue ! So far I had only spawned in the blocks below the portals once. (guess that was fixed shortly thereafter)

There is like a hundred horses just to the west of this location about 40 meters

OK, I just shut the game down completely and rebooted it.
Now the crazy thing let me equip the chest on the Mule and Donkey both.
Now I am going to go sit in my corner for a while.

I have tried it both on and off the animals.
You used to be able to put a chest on a donkey or a mule (before 1.8) this is a new game since 1.8.
I finally found a donkey after many hours of searching, (they seem to be more rare to find now),
Tamed said donkey and was going to put a chest on it for a pack animal but there is no longer a slot for the chest.
I bred the donkey with a horse as they also had the capability of mounting a chest.
After taming the Mule I found it also is missing the chest slot.
You could see the slot for a chest even without having a chest selected.
Same as seeing the Saddle slot, they are gone now and only the Saddle slot is still there.
Once again, I apologize for my short fuse. I'm a 55 year old phart.

Here it a file of what My portal I spawned in , it is inside a cobble house now, Spawned in midair with no netherack attached between 2 shear drops about 23 blocks above lava ocean.
After reading to the bottom of the comments, I see that what it mentions in MC-881 is duplicate to my issue
Never mind the last, I changed it ! shows the user name now in the full name line.
And Why is this stupid reporting system showing my Full name and NOT my user name ?????????????????
I have not had this problem as of yet,
My problem is the portal spawning in mid air right over the lava ocean with nothing to step out on.
Sometimes I do get like maybe 10 blocks of netherack on one side to step out on, but that is also floating over the lava to where I have to build a bridge to reach the biome areas
Ok, I will report only one per in the future,
But this does NOT resolve my issue as to what the F*** killed me . . .
I was not bobbing as it suggests in your MC-881 link . . . I was drifting smoothly on the water . . .
I DIDN'T hit anything but water . . .
There were NO MOBS anywhere around me . . .
And shouldn't you take ZERO damage when falling into water ???? Instead of Dying instantly ????
I mean like I have jumped off of 254 blocks of sand into a single layer of water with no damage that I am aware of . ..
And in ONLY 2 Months of playing it !
Is This Game is BENT on Killing Me or What ! ! !
This makes the 9th time I have seen the funny pink screen . . .
But at least I KNOW what killed Me the other 8 times . . .
Added photo of nether portal - had lava flowing around both sides - Luckily spawned inside portal - cleared one side to get out an stop lava flow - I believe this was in version 1.8.1
