The problem was resolved. The issue is that you must wait for the authentication to be received by the console after completing the remoteconnect procedure. This can take some time, and there is no indication on the console that you must wait. Initially I was pressing the B button to go back, and inadvertently was cancelling the process. Once I left the device on the remoteconnect screen, it eventually confirmed that the process was successful.
