Having exactly the same hang on an older MacBook Pro. Mojang also refused to accept my report as a bug. MC-14774

The wiki's not as clear as it could be: MC-2025 is listed under bugs still outstanding.

Thanks @Nathan. I appreciated your explanations, even though the mods considered them spam and removed them. Your comment about slower computers having more lag, and therefore seeing more of this issue—particularly in 1.5 which is a bit slower—made a lot of sense. My FPS is around 20, so lots of escapes 8-(

It's got a lot worse for me since 1.5: my crowded pens of chickens are having regular escapes (walls of wooden fence, fence gates, and cobblestone).
