I have had the same issue happen 3 times now in a local server (1.15.2). I slow down before I land on the ground like normal to a speed that would normally have no fall damage but for some reason, it just instantly kills you. This glitch also happened to my friend on the same server. This bug REALLY needs to be fixed I have luckily not lost any items to it yet. I can't imagine trying to use the elytra on hardcore.
