I updated my graphics using AMD Adrenalin and worked for me. Check what version you have for your pc and try to updated them.

I've updated my driver's and updated the graphics and restarted my pc, and it seemed to work! I've also gave the game some extra memory usage.

Resolved I thought as problem was solved. All good now with latest down load of new launcher on OSX 10.13.6, with latest update Java.

You are correct, new versions do open with the new launcher.  Have not had time to play, but a new game with latest version was successfully opened, as well as older games under previous versions.

This issue appears resolved with the download of the new launcher.

Yes, issue with latest release occurs, same as previous release. Can still load 1.16.5. There appears nothing more I can add.  See uploaded image "1.18.1 load fail".

 

This outcome not a problem for me currently. Happy to keep playing 1.16.5. However, offering as this may affect other players.

Mathew.  Yes I had some initial trouble doing same with same reason for confidence.  Using email address and password did not work, but using user name and password did work.  Hope that helps. If not, post a fresh issue I suggest. 

I note new launcher.  Still can not open 1.17.1, crashes under OSX 10.13.6 on retina MBP 20212.  Updated Java to  Java 8 Update 301. No change.

At first thought with updated launcher, I could not access older (recent) versions.  Issue was user wetware error, so re-editing this post.  This option still all good as workaround.

Minecraft 1.17 on OSX 10.13.6, with latest up to date java, has fatal error - exit error 1 on loading.  Running 1.17 using downloaded with Minecraft java, makes no difference.

Opening Minecraft 1.16.5 all opens, normal, no issues.  Seems to be a release issue.

I wish it worked like that! I've tried that about 4 times in a row haha. Uninstalled and cleared all minecraft folders off of my pc. Checked firewall settings. Cleared all minecraft files before each restart on task manager... Soooo frustrating!

Ok I found a fix to the black texture glitch. You want to go to https://www.geforce.com/drivers and download the "Automatic Driver Updates" and then wait for your stuff to stop being downloaded and then open minecraft and it works now!

Any ideas for why I can't play when I press 'Start Anyway'? Rather frustrating as I haven't been able to play for 3 weeks now.

That's the issue, Minecraft does not start when I select 'Start Anyway' so I cannot play at all at the moment.
