I uploaded the world I backed up to change the latest release 1.21.5 version of Realm to the latest snapshot 25w16a, but the upload failed! 504 error appears with the phrase

I used the method proposed by the support team, but it didn't work at all
Can confirm this issue is still happening. Realms recently(ish) cut support for 1.21.1-1.21.4 worlds, so I spent some time updating my datapack to the newest version, only to realize that I now can’t even upload it to Realms. It’s been 5 days, and it still won’t work. Why am I paying for MC Realms if I can’t even upload a world?
Also having this issue. Code bounces between 504 and 401 for me. I tried optimizing the world, didn’t do anything.
It's frustrating that it's not resolved
This is the solution proposed by the support team
It's not working at all
》》》
Completely close out of Minecraft and reopen the game
Sign out of your Microsoft account, then sign back in
Try to upload/download the world again
If you find that the upload/download is finishing almost immediately, this means that it was unsuccessful. Please note that you may need to try again more than once.
Just tried the proposed fix and I am still unable to upload a world to my realm.
proposed fix doesnt work
Any updates? I'd love to use the service I'm paying for.
Experiencing the same issue. Thought it might be the world I was uploading but had the same issue with a world that previously uploaded without issue a few days ago. Previous recommended fixes from this sight did not help.
As per other posts. On reaching 100%, MC verifies the upload and after about 3 minutes the 504 error comes up. Closing the realm prior to upload doesn’t help, neither does flushing DNS, rebooting the PC and router and half a dozen other attempts to upload my world.
I raised the issue on another ticket on 25-April, now 1 week ago!! Suggested fixed do not work.
Dear Mojang please get this one resolved
I’m having the same issue when trying to upload a world to Realms.
One of the datapacks needed updating so I downloaded the world, fixed the problem and reuploaded it. Not only did it fail to upload the fixed world, it also overwrites the old world with a completely new world. I keep having to restore backups.
As Potater said, I’d like to use the service I’m paying for. Please provide an update on the matter.
I am also having the same Upload failed! (504) after the world verification.
Tried everything from restarting the client and closing the realm before uploading. I then assumed maybe the file size was too big and proceeded to reduce the world file size from 4gb to 200mb by deleting chunks and stillfhad the same upload failed 504 error.
Mojang please fix this i would like to update my world and be able to use the service i am paying for thank you
Issue hasnt been addressed. Error 504 and 401 still happening
I'm having the same problem, optimizing the world, deleting unnecessary chunks, uploading from a different PC doesn't work
After numerous 504 errors and the occasional 401 error, the aftermath to the “playable” realm is always the same. When entering a realm post 504 error, chunks are replaced mostly by the original seed. It’s very sporadic what happens to the realm after each 504 error as different areas are erased. However it’s mostly areas where the newest chunks have seen changes. Oddly some replaced chunks have been replaced by biomes/features that are not part of the original seed.
It would be really cool to use the Realms service I am paying for in the manner I expect it to behave. Stable and as advertised. Have not experienced these issue a few years back when I used to play regularly with family.
Similar issue in 1.21.5, trying to upload ANY world fails with message “Upload failed! (-1)” after some small percentage of upload, even a world I literally just downloaded from the Realm with NO changes to it.
week #3, no solutions yet
I play on the realm with my family. We’ve been having this problem since the 25 of April. I didn’t understand that the 504 error was slowly eating away at the world we were creating with every upload until after this ticket was made. We would love to play together again.
Java MC on Windows 10.
So far I have tried the following to upload an updated single player game and only receive the 504 error with a couple of 401 errors in response.
Used CMD to flush dns cache and a few other things as advised.
Turned router off and on.
Logged out of MC launcher and back in.
Moved my Save folder to desktop and uninstalled MC, the MC launcher and anything else MC related from the settings. After doing so I also deleted ALL MC related folders in the appdata/roaming folder. Reset PC and reinstalled MC and Save folder from desktop.
Temporarily removed ALL saves from the save folder leaving only one save to upload thinking there may be a gig limit in the saves folder. Nope, 504 error again.
Tried to upload a small world, about 100ish meg as opposed to my 1.6 gig world. Nope 504 again.
Updated graphics drivers (Nvidia) after an update 25 April.
Ensured Windows Firewall allowed (ticked) both private and network for Java, Minecraft, Minecraft Launcher and also “Open JDK Platform Binary”.
None of the above made any difference whatsoever.
Other than doing a crazy moon dance ritual running around naked in the garden, I’m all out of ideas.
As previously mentioned. I have been using Realms since 2015. Most of that time I have had a continuous subscription. Had a few odd quirks but nothing that a second try wouldn’t fix. This however is unacceptable. 504 errors are usually server errors not from end users.
Bro this is ridiculous. I am paying for my realm and I cannot even upload a world to the service I am paying for. How long is this gonna take to fix?????
I too am encountering this issue.
I also am having this issue since Monday. I cannot access any of my already uploaded worlds in my Realms since this I attempted to upload the new one.
it is amazing how
-Slow upload speeds
-Slow processing rates
-Unresponsive/no explanation from the bug itself
and for almost 4 weeks now and ZERO feedback from Mojang
I too am having this issue. I went to reupload my main world my friends and I play through realms because I was updating a datapack. I am many attempts in, but consistently have the realm upload fail at the verifying stage, giving the 504 error. That is, if it even reaches that stage. I've also had multiple instances of the upload failing at any percent between 0 and 100 saying “Upload failed! (-1)”. In the past I've had minor issues with realm uploads, but ultimately was able to eventually upload a world successfully after a few attempts. This, however, is ridiculous, considering I still haven't had a successful upload over the past 4 hours of attempting. This desperately needs to be fixed!
Really awful and disappointing. Spent many hours trying to fix. Our realm has been ruined since April 26th because of this. We check the bug tracker every day and still nothing.
Possible fix found by reddit user Bradyevander098
https://redd.it/1ki7a60
I tried it myself and got it to work
In case you don't want to open Reddit, here is a step by step of how the workaround goes
-Upload your Realm
-When prompted about the 504 error, wait around 1-5 minutes
-Go to your world back ups on the Realm settings and you should have a 1-5 minutes old backup created. Restore it
This worked for me on 4 different occasions
I just tried this ‘fix’ and my world is so broken. Thankfully I have a good version in a single player world still.
Thank you Ilexand for sharing. I tried this twice and unfortunately it didn’t work. This fix however for me work with disconnects where you lose about 20-30 mins worth of work while in the realm.
Hopefully this work around will help others. In my opinion, I believe this issue is a Mojang server issue, not an end user issue. I have had this issue now since around the 23rd of May. I’m really not getting any value out of my subscription.
Edit: 23rd of April (not May)
I’m a little saddened by the last email I received from Mojang Help Desk that in my opinion gave up on my Realms issue claiming it was due to a corrupt save. The save in question works without a hitch in single player. I also drew the help desks attention to the fact that ALL worlds I tested (not just the one I want to play) DIDN’T upload.
The actual world I wanted to use on Realms is my family server that I play with my daughters. I have as a result unsubbed from Realms and will check for further updates if a fix is found. Till then, no further payments.
In my opinion, this is a real corporate “cop out” and feels that way in the wording. I would have at least expected a dedicated helpdesk would reach out and request a copy of the “corrupted” world via google drive or One Drive bearing in mind ALL saves uploads come up with the same 504 error, not just my family save.
Anyway, considering a third party server which is something I didn’t want to do (please note, I have excluded the posters name).
The corporately worded post from the Mojang (Microsoft?) helpdesk is as follows:
Thank you for your patience.
Our team has reviewed your case once more, taking everything under consideration. The conclusion has been made, and it's that the world seems to be corrupted.
Since you have mentioned using Amulet, and the troubleshooting steps do not work, it's possible that the world was modified and corrupted throughout this process. Moreover, when a world is constantly updated, it can also get corrupted, and the world in question 10 years old.
Since Amulet is an independently developed third-party application, we can’t troubleshoot because we didn’t develop it here at Mojang. I can provide you with some resources that will help you identify and contact the developer for support:
Mods for Minecraft: Java Edition
Additionally, please, allow me to explain that your Minecraft save data―which includes things like your worlds, inventory, dropped items, and skins―is stored locally and is not attached in any way to your account. Mojang does not store this information, meaning the data only exists locally on your device. This means that, as much as I would love to assist you, we are unable to recover that data if it has been lost or corrupted.
I highly recommend reading our guides that review how to manage your data and game storage in Minecraft: Java Edition.
I know that this might not be the answer you were hoping for; however, I thank you for your time reviewing this matter with us, nonetheless.
Sincerely,
Minecraft Support,
Darren, thank you for sharing that email. I’ll be cancelling my Realm sub as well.
despite the workaround, this isnt solved yet
I having this issue as well, is Mojang really ignoring it or did they just address this specific person? It seems to be spreading wider and wider.
For me, the upload 504 error occurred around the 23rd of April. I’m guessing last time I had a successful upload would have been just prior to the original poster’s bug report.
Wondering if Mojang (Microsoft) made a few internal server changes around that time that effected a number of Realm users like us.
I am also experiencing this issue. I first discovered it on 5/17/2025 while updating data packs. I downloaded the world from realms, copied the data packs, and re uploaded it with an error. I tried to prune the file down using MCA Selector and re upload, but that didn't work. I've never had an issue with this before.
I have this issue, I bet they are waiting until the next update before dealing with this issue. They have said in the past the game is about exploring new worlds versus keeping your old old ones going, so they likely just don’t care and hope you’ll just make a new world and play again.
Haven’t played MC for about 5 days. Thought I’d give realms a try and see if they have fixed their server issues and now I’m greeted with a 502 error. Bravo Microsoft Mojang.
[media]Having this exact issue. Have tried with multiple saves. Nothing works and now i cant even connect to my own realm.
This has literally ruined the game for all of us on the realm. For over a month, we haven’t been able to play on our world. There is no point in us wasting our time on a random new world. Have been checking almost daily since April… Never had this problem in almost ten years of using realms. It’s just so awful and disappointing. We finally have time to play more often (spring break and now summer) but we just can’t.
Having the same issue. On the edge of my seat LOL.
Also having this issue. When it’s uploaded, verifies, and has the subsequent (504) error, if you go to ‘backups’ and restore the latest backup (a previous failed attempt at uploading), the chunks and player data is gone. However if you happen to use datapacks (Like I do) they work just fine. So somewhere in verification between ‘datapacks’ and ‘chunks' the whole thing breaks.
Back last month on the 22nd May (nearly 2 wks ago) I received the following from helpdesk. I haven’t heard anything else since. Not a thing!
Against my better judgment I resubscribed to see if the issue has been addressed. It hasn’t! Still the same 504 error 😕
Hello again Darren,
Thank you for this context. I have further information to provide regarding this ticket.
This is a known issue the development team is currently working on that should mitigate the issue as soon as possible.
Thank you for your understanding.
Kind regards,
Minecraft Support, Lance V.
Just a subtle bump.. As per photo below (taken a few minutes ago) the 504 error is still a thing and needs some attention: Another week and no feedback on the status of this issue from Mojang.
[media]The problem is still present in the newest release candidate
[media]The issue is still there. it's been like 2 months without my realm.
Yeah, it's a real bummer, it doesn't even let me upload the same world imidiately after downloading it from realms
Same here regarding 504 error in the no update. No feedback from Mojang in the Bug Tracker forums as too where they are at regarding this issue.
[media]Yup, it’s still happening for me too. I’m trying to remove some datapacks from my Realms world but like this I simply can’t.
I’ve also faced the infamous “Upload failed. (504)” error.
It felt like a nightmare — I had tried everything. I even built a macro that would automatically attempt to upload the same world in a loop, but it didn’t help.
I tried trimming chunks, reducing the total size, renaming the save, restoring the latest backup — nothing worked.
But I think I’ve finally figured out what causes this error.
As you know, Realms servers verify your files after the actual upload is complete. However, Azure servers aren’t particularly strong, so they struggle to analyze or verify a large number of files — or perhaps they intentionally throttle this process to prevent upload spamming or server attacks. Either way, a timeout occurs during the verification process.
The “Upload failed. (504)” error is most likely caused by the number of files, not the total file size.
In my case, I had around 4,500 map data files in the savegame/data/
folder. After deleting about half of them, I was able to upload my save to my Realms server without any issues.
So I strongly recommend checking and deleting excess map_*.dat
files or any other folders with too many individual files. For example, if many unique players have joined your world, you might also have a large number of stats
files in the save folder.
Still had the same error. Cut down my world from 3GB to 780MB and files from 1100 to 300. Stops at error 504 or 401. Once, after an error-out, I was able to get my world with about half of my existing chunks regenerated (buildings half gone). Uploading with a 30MB world with 50 files works fine. It’s kinda frustrating.
Although I managed to reduce the world size and the upload completed successfully, I still can’t join the realm. The world itself is fine, I can play singleplayer.
[media]I keep coming back to this thread to see if there has been a fix implemented or a reliable work around. Till there is a fix, no more subscriptions from me. The 504 error AFAIK is a server error. Wondering if MS Mojang cheaped out with their servers in some way to save a few bucks as a number of people starting experiencing the 504 error around the later part of April. Gotta keep those share holders happy hey.
I’m not overly hopeful of this issue being fixed.
Do you host your server through a third-party service? If so, which one are you using? I’m considering switching as well.
Reduced my world size further to 331MB and 193 files. Still no luck.
This is absolutely shocking that this issue has been outstanding for over 3 months with no updates or meaningful progress. This is a paid subscription service that is being rendered unusable by this problem. How is it possible that this hasn’t been prioritized?
Strofo, IKR!!! I am so bummed about it. I really enjoyed playing with my friends and kids on our realm. I have the realm world as single player world for now. Hoping this will get fixed, but now considering a server so we can play together again.
I have had 3 consecutive emails (12 July 2024) from Mojang advising me they have merged other 504 threads I have “up voted” into this one. Here’s hoping they resolve this issue or at least provide some in sight/PR they are working on it at all instead of just merging threads.
I have used realms for around 10 years most of which was continuous subscription. It’s a server issue and more than likely from MS Mojang server changes that they haven’t and are not addressing. I get the feeling the volume of people experiencing the 504 error doesn’t effect the money generated by Realms isn’t significant enough and therefore deemed irrelevant.

Thank you for your report!
We're tracking this issue in REALMS-12617 , so this ticket is being resolved and linked as a duplicate.
If you would like to add a vote and any extra information to the main ticket it would be appreciated.
If you haven't already, you might like to make use of the search feature to see if the issue has already been mentioned.
Confirmed in 1.21.8, really sad to see this isn’t a new issue. I’ll probably be switching to a third party service due to this.
[media]Hi, 3 August 2025, I recently got into this forum and I´ve been experiencing the same errors for months! I downloaded my world to “update” my data packs since they were not working properly and I couldn't upload it ever again! Not even a back up straight from the working realm, I´m now trying to create a new world with a datapack and not even that would work, apparently this datapack exceeds whatever limit this Azure sever thingy has, so not even a new world would work. From what I'm seeing there hasn't being any updates in terms of solving the issue but if anybody knows anything please update me!
Same here!
The issue still persists, Any update would be nice, I've been paying for nothing since April, when the issue first started,
Please, I have been stuck uploading the same world for hours and hours over the course of days. This issue is getting maddening
The issue is still relevant. Very disappointing to see that it is several months old.
I’ve been trying for a long time. It’s got to be at least a year.
This issue is still relevant! Just in case anyone was wondering if the ability to upload your own worlds to your Realm, you know, debatably one of the most important aspects to it! Better hope you never have to restore a backup of your world if its not the one already on that Realm! If you want to upload a world and it has even 5 datapacks, or just a few map files, the game will give you an Error 504 after failing to verify it, because apparently this issue isn’t important enough to formally address within FOUR MONTHS of its creation!
Can report that issue is still happening
