That was back in version 1.4 of minecraft, literally FOUR years ago. I hardly think that is still relevant seeing how much minecraft has changed since then. That also doesn't explain why features were deliberately designed around them and worked perfectly fine in versions 1.8 all the way to 1.10.
Additionally, Jebs comment said that he didn't want to chase "bugs like these" referring to the context of the issue he commented that in. That context, however, has nothing to do with the context of this bug. Jeb never specifically stated in that thread that he would never fix any bug dealing with higher potion amplifiers. I believe Jeb's comment is being taken out of context.
I also started having this issue a few days ago. Knowing a little about json, I found the LastUsed fields in the launcher profiles, and saw for myself that the field is in fact not updating at all.
I tried with many versions, including forge modded, optifine, and completely vanilla, but no matter what, it was sorted incorrectly and the LastUsed field was unchanged.
I tried resetting the entire folder thinking it was just a one time bug, but this did not help. Instead, all profiles had the field set to the default of "1970-01-01T00:00:00.000Z".
TLDR: I can confirm this bug is as a result of the LastUsed field not updating in the launcher_profiles.json file, and that I am also experiencing this issue exactly the same as William Stull appears to be.
Attached is my launcher_profiles file (although this is after I had reset it).
