Have you tried the "force update" option before you log in?
If that doesn't work try opening the task manager and look for "javaw.exe" if it's there end it. that should enable you to delete the .minecraft file [don't forget to backup your worlds 😉 ]
I can't seem to recreate it,
I made a new superflat world, and built a 1x10 staircase out of grass blocks, reaching 10 blocks in height.
I spawned a mooshroom, and held wheat as I walked backwards up the stairs.
I did the same with a normal cow, and a sheep.
all three were able to follow me up the stairs with no problem.
this was tested in 1.4.5 and also in 1.4.6
I did notice some of the pivoting you mentioned while I was guiding them down, but I think that was because I was flying and too far away, it stopped after i went closer.
only other problem I had was with the cow in 1.4.6 right when I spawned it I experienced the disinterest bug.
Other than the listed problems I was unable to recreate it.
This is pretty old isn't it? I think I remember this back in beta.
I'd rather it not affect your FOV at all, it made it quite annoying to record my minecart coaster.
If it's saying "not downloaded" I think that means it can't connect to minecraft.net(or wherever it does) to download the files. could your firewall be blocking it maybe?
