I spent some time trying to find a way to reproduce this issue to make it easier for the folks at Mojang to debug. ++Unfortunately I couldn't reproduce this easily, but I thought I would share what I found in the hope it might help.
I see the crash on the Switch when using Minecraft 1.12.0 from my sons account. Minecraft is linked with a Microsoft account. Parental controls are applied to both the Switch account and Microsoft account.
The game will crash when trying to change the skin from:
The home screen
From within a world
The skin select screen loads briefly, then crashes while the left hand panel displays a loading bar.
However, I am able to change skins when using Minecraft 1.12.0 from my account - parent account, no parental controls. This is also linked with my Microsoft account.
I had some suspicions that this might be linked to changing your skin from another device as my son plays on the Xbox. Unfortunately I was able to change my skin on the Xbox, open the Switch and change my skin back.
You can work around this issue by changing your skin on another device or via the Marketplace directly. It would be much better though for this to be fixed!
