This situation happened because how bedrock online multiplayer world works.
The player hosting the game must be online and actively running a world with permissions set to allow multiplayer games.
You may encounter problems connecting to multiplayer games if all players aren’t playing the most recent version of Minecraft. Check the settings on your game platform to make sure you’re receiving automatic updates.
And it looks like you were playing on Minecraft console..
Check subscription status: If you are playing Minecraft multiplayer on a console, you must be subscribed to either Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, or PlayStation Plus to be able to play with friends.

But, as cool as it is.. from your description, you had pointed out affected versions (only from Java, not from Bedrock).
Therefore!
The issue you had open must be put on https://report.bugs.mojang.com/servicedesk/customer/portal/2 portal and not Minecraft: BE portal(the one you are currently looking at).
We could not respond your issue with more clarity due to the technical issue.
