Hm, I've messed with the timings of my elevator on my SMP server and actually managed to get it working again.
For some reason the ride is a lot less smoother than it used to be, though. Quite jerky movement. Probably because of the server repeatedly saying "nope, you're actually here".
It seems you are correct that carts are tracked on both ends, Nathan.
Which means this bug can probably be closed. Yay?
A compromise would be to have the directly player driven vehicles (Boats/Pigs/Horses) be clientside for better player experience, but keep minecarts serverside.
This would be much better for automatic train stations/crossings with synchronization mechanisms on multiplayer servers too.
Or give us some way to build fast elevators that work reliably on SMP.
I have to say I'm rather disappointed with seemingly every new version destroying major technologies the community invented based on game mechanics.
The amount of stuff this breaks for me is truly staggering. Why was this change even done? The fact they didn't power comparators from the side is a complete non-issue (you can just use a torch there)
This "fix" breaks more than it fixes.
A redstone block shouldn't power things behind the blocks it touches. This makes it extremely hard to use them for their original intended purpose (sticky pistons) without breaking the circuit they're in.
I think this may to do with the fact hopper minecarts can be used to vacuum items along the way (~18.5 items/second according to the wiki).
IMO any fix for the superfast unloading (if that's even necessary), should not affect the minecart vacuuming ability or they become pretty useless for (farm) loot collection.
Still present in 13w09b.
For something advertised as a redstone update, one would expect this to be deemed a priority issue... :-/
And in 13w05b.
Note that this is a rather critical issue that can render worlds unusable; I cannot load my world anymore because it crashes immediately.
I thought I said it can be closed?
