More notes on breakage:
A world of size 512 doesn't break, even if it stretches down to -128. This means that the problem isn't with negative coordinates per se.
This doesn't seem to be just a rendering issue: The chunks flat-out just don't seem to load once they have a block on them.
This is quite bad.
