This bug is extremely annoying. I'am almost done constructing a lift system for multiplayer using minecarts und carefully tested the directions to build it in the right way. It always worked fine until i decided to change the location of the whole lift. So I copied it with world edit. Same direction, no rotation, flip, or anything. And It always didn't work.
So I did some research. I'm not done yet but I can tell that it's extremely random. Meaning: If I build it at one spot it seems to always work/work not the same way. So the direction is related to the spot. If I then copy my device to another spot without rotating it, same direction in which I drive onto the rail, same rotation, as before, but still: different results. Almost seems like the way, the lily pad direction works in minecraft. The actual driving direction itself doesn't seem to matter.
I also created a single player flatworld, teleporting me to coordinates 0,5,0 then marking the x=0 z=0 position and building rails in all the four quadrants. Every quadrant showed a different behavior. But as I mentiond before, there are more factors and I got different behavior within the four quadrants on different worlds as well.
Conclusion: This is definetly a shitty implementation. I will try to use pistons in order to push players, so it doesn't matter, how the direction works. Just tested the map in 1.8.6., still not fixed. Its over a year and still not fixed, extremely poor work, sry I have to say it that harsh but that's what I think right now.
