I have the exact same issue on the same tablet - Asus Nexus 7 2012.
1.7 worked but 1.8 does not. I've flattened the tablet twice and tried installing two different non-stock 7.1.2 OS's then installing the game again, but same issue..
Is there anyway to get a kosher version of the 1.7 apk until Mojang fix the issue (if they even bother as it seems it is a very niche problem we have)?
