I think we can conclude that there is indeed a bug.
And that indeed customers, mostly young kids, have lost a lot of work since a new installation is necessary in order to be able to use Minecraft again.
And now I read in a post that the chance of experiencing the same bug and problems is realistic. Why? And what is done to prevent it?

This issue happens to me all the time! It is aggravating! I use a Mac (Java). While breaking blocks with my pick, it will switch automatically without my input. Most of the wear on my sword is from unexpectedly whacking rocks. It also does this during combat.

I am not able to confirm if the issue is resolved or not. My son removed the corrupted version of Minecraft and installed a new version again a few days after the issue became obvious, by that loosing all his work he did till then. He still feels sad about that.
Anyway, it seems to work ok now. Hope it stays that way.
