I have this issue on 1.16.220 as well, on all linux systems I have tried but one. The difference between the one that worked and the others that don't is that the one that worked is a gentoo-linux system that has not been updated in months. I believe the issue might relate to something specific with the user authenticator code and some minor incompatibility with newer versions of openssl or similar. What the old, working linux system has is as follows, in case anyone wants to try:
