I have this issue on 1.16.220 as well, on all linux systems I have tried but one. The difference between the one that worked and the others that don't is that the one that worked is a gentoo-linux system that has not been updated in months. I believe the issue might relate to something specific with the user authenticator code and some minor incompatibility with newer versions of openssl or similar.
