Yes. So happy. The issue for me has been resolved. Can finally dig around in my chest again and it not crash.
Very happy the team was able to get this figured out and solved.

I just tested and I still have the freeze in 1.0.4.

This is still an issue. I see it hasn't been assigned yet; hoping another comment will bring more attention to it. I'd be more than happy to upload my map with the broken chest/hopper.

I am having this same issue in Survival.
I had a double chest under two hoppers for a mob spawn trap. If I open chest it would freeze the game. I was able to break one of the chests off and it was fine. I then tried to break the other and it froze. I tried to open the single chest and it froze.
I then recreated the spawn trap directly above the freezing chest and it worked fine for one play session. Now the new setup freezes to desktop if I try to open the double chest. The original chest that froze the game still freezes and returns to desktop.

I tried this on 12-1-16 with update 0/16/2 and issue still exists.

TL;DR: Have same issue with double hopper on top of double chest at mob spawn trap. Chest freezes game.

I've got this same problem. Initially thought it was an item a mob dropped, but then realized all my hopper collection traps cause freezes.
I've also found that if I try and open a chest attached to a hopper my game will also freeze.
Mine is on 10 beta.
