I have not had a problem with the wolves and cats directly despawning in the latest updates. I have however had a couple of instances where they slowly move towards walls and other blocks as other players walk past them on a server (The wolves and cats rotate to watch players). Eventually they suffocate and disappear making it appear like the issue is still out there.
