On a 1.4.2/1.4.5 Minecraft default server. 7 tamed wolves in a cobble fence pen, 3 dogs outside of said pen, pen of 15 sheep nearby, village with 7 villagers nearby, in a desert biome, leaving the wolves completely alone for a few days.
This is a unresolved bug from 1.2.5. If a tamed wolf (or group of wolves) is left alone (on a minecraft server) for a few Minecraft days (sometimes more), the whole group of them eventually despawn all at once. Possibly because other mobs spawning in the area eventually forces them to despawn?

No. It is a personal server I run off my computer with no more than 5 people on at any one time. In this particular case, I was on alone. One day my dogs were there, I checked back a few days later and every single one was gone. This has happened several times. Back in 1.2.5 I had a Bukkit server and I had 1 group of 15 dogs and 3-4 groups of 4 despawn on me. I thought it could have been Bukkit itself or one of my plugins so I paid it little mind. Now the exact same thing is happening on a 1.4.2 default server. I lost one dog at first, then went out and tamed a large group but they went away as well. Only thing I can figure is breeding farm animals in the same loaded chunks may be reaching the mob limit at night when hostiles spawn, and despawning the dogs enmass to free up the mob count.
The same thing is happening to me too whenever I tame more wolves. I play on a private server that only I play on most of the time and the exact same thing is happening 😞.
Same thing happened to my brother, we were playing on LAN 1.4.2 and all his 5 dogs disappeared and never returned. Don't know how to replicated though. They had dyed collars, were sitting, and nobody else is playing on the map.
Happened to me and my girlfriend, i open to LAN to play with her, and in the third day(irl) we was mining, and when we returned all the dogs disappeared at the same time, mine and hers. We got most of the dogs in the second day(irl).
Tails,
I have not had a single cat despawn in 1.6.2. Ever. I don't know about other peoples' experiences, but as far as I can tell, it's been resolved in 1.6.2 and the fix is already in place. Considering nobody else has commented on the issue since my last one, I think it may be safe to assume this is the case for everyone. <3
Thanks to you and all the devs for caring and making a great product!

I can confirm that baby cats do grow to adulthood now in 1.6.2 (on a multiplayer Server). 🙂
Thx a lot!
I have not had a problem with the wolves and cats directly despawning in the latest updates.
I have however had a couple of instances where they slowly move towards walls and other blocks as other players walk past them on a server (The wolves and cats rotate to watch players). Eventually they suffocate and disappear making it appear like the issue is still out there.
I still have this problem in 1.6.2, and it appears others might as well (relevant corroborating forum links below).
Here's my breakdown of the issue: Ocelots who are tamed stay forever, but any cats that are bred from those tamed Ocelots always despawn (some time after leaving the area, but not usually on server reset).
How to reproduce:
Three cats (who were born from cats who used to be tamed Ocelots, not commands) I bred despawned after:
1. I walked through the nether with one following me.
2. Exit the nether and wait for cat to teleport next to me.
3. Instruct cat to stay.
4. Went back through nether. When I returned after visiting another chunk, I returned through the nether to no cat. This was alone with no other people present on the server.
5. This bug is reproducible even if cat is led on a tether through the nether.
This bug also would seem to affect dogs as well. At first I thought this might be a Bukkit issue, but other server operators running 1.6.2 vanilla confirmed that this is still an issue.

I love Minecraft, but just hate this bug! Since this issue has been marked "resolved," I'll give it a day to see if feedback arises then post as new issue.
Thanks for all your hard work.!
Could it be that others on the server are killing your dogs? Their barking can be quite annoying.
