MC-1407

Tamed wolves and cats despawn

On a 1.4.2/1.4.5 Minecraft default server. 7 tamed wolves in a cobble fence pen, 3 dogs outside of said pen, pen of 15 sheep nearby, village with 7 villagers nearby, in a desert biome, leaving the wolves completely alone for a few days.
This is a unresolved bug from 1.2.5. If a tamed wolf (or group of wolves) is left alone (on a minecraft server) for a few Minecraft days (sometimes more), the whole group of them eventually despawn all at once. Possibly because other mobs spawning in the area eventually forces them to despawn?

Could it be that others on the server are killing your dogs? Their barking can be quite annoying.

migrated

No. It is a personal server I run off my computer with no more than 5 people on at any one time. In this particular case, I was on alone. One day my dogs were there, I checked back a few days later and every single one was gone. This has happened several times. Back in 1.2.5 I had a Bukkit server and I had 1 group of 15 dogs and 3-4 groups of 4 despawn on me. I thought it could have been Bukkit itself or one of my plugins so I paid it little mind. Now the exact same thing is happening on a 1.4.2 default server. I lost one dog at first, then went out and tamed a large group but they went away as well. Only thing I can figure is breeding farm animals in the same loaded chunks may be reaching the mob limit at night when hostiles spawn, and despawning the dogs enmass to free up the mob count.

migrated

The same thing is happening to me too whenever I tame more wolves. I play on a private server that only I play on most of the time and the exact same thing is happening 😞.

migrated

Same thing happened to my brother, we were playing on LAN 1.4.2 and all his 5 dogs disappeared and never returned. Don't know how to replicated though. They had dyed collars, were sitting, and nobody else is playing on the map.

migrated

Happened to me and my girlfriend, i open to LAN to play with her, and in the third day(irl) we was mining, and when we returned all the dogs disappeared at the same time, mine and hers. We got most of the dogs in the second day(irl).

migrated

Happened to me as well and I was playing on a normal multiplayer server.

migrated

This relates to MC-695, which explains what is going on and how to reproduce.

migrated

@ Joel Fivat I do not believe this relates to that problem.
A. All these wolves were tamed on a new 1.4.2 world.
B. None of them were growling or had been killed/ hit by another player or myself.
C. I could make them all stand/ sit no problem.

migrated

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

migrated

Confirmed. Also this happens in the 1.4.5

migrated

Confirmed in 1.4.6 SMP, 3 dogs, owned by 2 players, disappeared at the same time.

migrated

Exact same problem here, 1.4.7 confirmation also it seems to be happening on LAN worlds Help fix this mojang!

migrated

Seems to only happen to wolves with dyed collars.

migrated

I never dyed my wolves collars and they still disappear. The most weird part is that they disappear all at the same time.

migrated

Something weird for me is that my brother accidentally hit my dog while fighting, he was killed and after a while we went tree farming but after we came back all our wolves were missing so we had to tame new ones. Again there was another angry wolf situation and my newly tamed wolves disappeared and the old angry ones cam back!!!

migrated

This just happened to me in the latest preview build. I think this is actually a really simple issue, the game probably only checks if a wolf is angry when it tries to despawn it so if your wolf is growling it will despawn even if it is tamed.

migrated

Affects 13w03a and 13w04a as well. Is there some way I can update this ticket myself or does the original creator need to do it?

migrated

Confirmed with 1.4.7. They fixed the "dogs randomly warping to you" but this new issue started happening immediately after. Same with tamed cats. I'm on a whitelisted SMP server with 3 active players and it has happened to all of us. We don't use dogs or cats anymore because this is a game-breaking bug for them.

migrated

An interesting thing happened this morning.

I was breeding cats (as I frequently do, since I live nowhere near the jungle and want to always have a cat on me), and after breeding two tuxedo cats together, I ended up with 5 ginger tabby kittens, a tux kitten, and a wild adult ocelot, all in addition to the cats that were already present at the moment.

I'm not sure how this may or may not be related, but figured I'd add in my experiences just in case.

Confirmed: Cats /sometimes/ come back! This leads me to believe they're not so much despawning as they are invisible and nonreactive for some reason. Confirmed by the presence of the disappeared cats in the crash report through creative use of named spawn eggs.

I had three cats sitting where I could find them. They stayed for 2 days. On the third day, only one cat was left. On the fourth day, it was back to two again. (All different breeds sitting in different spots to make it easier to know which was which.)

migrated

If they were tamed cats, and one of them reappeared, it could be that one of them was hiding when you were counting for them. The other two probably despawned, if you couldn't find them.

migrated

Very irritating bug, it makes taming wolves or cats pointless.

migrated

I think it is happening because they are rendered, but you aren't on the server, so they don't have an owner. If they don't have an owner, they disappear. (Just my theory, may be wrong)

migrated

@MF Not a bad theory, but it is incorrect. Whenever something has disappeared, I have always been online. Sometimes, even within the loaded chunks of the wolves!

migrated

My tamed cats don't disappear, but when I breed them their offspring do. Very annoying.

migrated

Yes Patrick, kittens are a lot worse at despawning than the adults.

Depending on how much you work with cats, you may not run into the despawning issue. Most recently I've had an adult stay for over two weeks (real time, not minecraft time). As soon as I brought in more adults and tried to get my crazy cat lady house setup again though, all the adults despawned within 4 hours. I'm not sure if more cats = more likely to despawn, but that seems to be the case anecdotally.

migrated

Still present in 1.5.1, please update 'affected Versions' so Mojang can see.

migrated

My experience matches Azure's. I've had cats and dogs stick around for a long time if they are small in numbers, but when I breed a lot of them, there's a chance that many will disappear. (Has always been while not logged in for me)

migrated

I've had six cats sitting in a single area and they have stayed around no issue for the last three updates, but my sitting tamed wolves have consistently despawned, most currently on the 1.5.1 update. I am playing on an SMP server, and am virtually the only one playing on it consistently.

migrated

Nice, looks like EvilSeph(Warren Loo) fixed this, but i'm curious to know what was causing this .-.

migrated

Thank goodness! Now we will be able to tame them for good! Hopefully...I wonder what was causing it to happen again too.

migrated

Sigh. I was really hoping they had actually fixed it instead of just closing the ticket, but no.

Don't get your hopes up people, it's still there even in 1.5.2 vanilla. 😞

migrated

If it isn't fixed yet, it should get reopened.

migrated

Well, they clearly thought it was fixed. People other than me need to prove its not. Once we get enough of a consensus, I'm sure they'll reopen.

migrated

Reopened.

migrated

Definitely still occuring, just confirmed on server for 1.5.2 for both cats and wolves, both as babies and adults.

migrated

They're fixing it in 1.6

migrated

The same thing happens to NPC Villagers... not all of them (so far), but several despawn after being away from them for several day. I lost my source for the diamond pickax blessing of 'Looting II with Sharpness III' that way! Sorry, I didn't think to collect data at that time. Since it happens over a period of time, it's hard to know how & what data to collect.

migrated

Problem occurs for me on 1.5.1

migrated

I am confused as to why it seems we are being directed here for the missing cat/kittens issue for multiplayer when I see no mention of it. I just want to check in on the issue though. Hope it is fixed soon. My cats are not disappearing, however my kittens are the minute I walk away after breeding.

migrated

If someone feels this happens with his horse, try this issue

https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MC-16769

It seems its not that he despawns, he just goes invisible.

migrated

I'm sure my dogs despawned instead of going invisible, you can't even hear them anymore.

migrated

Re: Can't hear them anymore...
THAT would be the one good thing that came from this. Their incessant barking (and cats' meowing and the other mobs chattering away) is WAY annoying to me. While I like hearing them, I despise hearing them so frequently! I hate to turn down/off the sound - I need to hear other cues from the environment. Wouldn't it be great if it were variable?
Thanks for this indulgence. This issue (the REAL issue of mobs despawning) & one other (mob babies suffocating upon adulthood) have my prickles up! Add the ever-present 3-5 fps LAG & I get positively LIVID.
Since MC is what I use to help me(via distraction) with my disease's Chronic Pain, you can see how very much this irritates me.

Can we PLEASE hear from the devs HERE about this issue?? ANY NEWS at all would be good to hear.

PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE!

thank you for this forum. I promise not to indulge like this again. i hope it shows HOW distracting/irritating this issue is & why it has to be addressed.

migrated

MC 1.5.2 (vanilla) After taming two ocelots and turning them into cats, I tried to make the cats love each other to breed baby cats. Baby cats do spawn, but as soon as they grow to adulthood, they disappear. First two baby cats were in "wait" mode. The last ones were in follow mode. With wolves and baby wolves everything is ok. Baby wolves grow perfectly to adulthood and won't dissapear.

migrated

I definitely fixed one of the causes of this issue and was unable to reproduce anything after the fix, so I marked this as Resolved and Fixed. I've gone through the comments and tried everything mentioned but have been unable to reproduce this issue once again. I just finished going through the last comment and my kitten turned into an adult cat and has not disappeared at all.

As much as I want to fix this issue (probably even more than you want us to), being able to reproduce the issue is the first step in fixing it and I'm having great difficulty doing so. If you can provide more detailed information and a way to reproduce it every single time, that would probably help me out immensely.

migrated

EvilSeph, the problem is there's no way to ensure it happens EVERY TIME.. although the more cats you have, the higher the likelihood one or more will vanish (at least in my experience.. which makes my resolution of "keep a breeding pair to replace the vanished cat" very hit-or-miss).

I'm willing to do ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING you ask me to do.

Do you need video? Is there some sort of logging I can setup and obtain for you beyond just the normal crash report?

Let me know. I don't care how much work it takes on my end. I'll install special logging software, make you a bunch of videos, create new worlds in different operating systems, LAN games, SSP, SMP, anything.

Also, at least in my experience, the kittens WILL grow to adulthood IF YOU STAY IN THE CHUNK WITH IT. If you walk away while it's a baby and expect to return to an adult, that will almost never happen.

Installing the latest snapshot now to do some testing.

Edit:

No problems in the snapshot 13w23a so far. Promising.

Another Edit 24 hours from the original post: So I see the problem in 1.5.2 still, but not in 13w23a. At all. I am shocked but also happy. I'll just keep playing snapshot until it goes live. =_=

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version 1.6.2 / Launcher version 1.1.3 ? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.

migrated

Tails,

I have not had a single cat despawn in 1.6.2. Ever. I don't know about other peoples' experiences, but as far as I can tell, it's been resolved in 1.6.2 and the fix is already in place. Considering nobody else has commented on the issue since my last one, I think it may be safe to assume this is the case for everyone. <3

Thanks to you and all the devs for caring and making a great product!

Thanks for the feedback.

migrated

I can confirm that baby cats do grow to adulthood now in 1.6.2 (on a multiplayer Server). πŸ™‚
Thx a lot!

migrated

I have not had a problem with the wolves and cats directly despawning in the latest updates.
I have however had a couple of instances where they slowly move towards walls and other blocks as other players walk past them on a server (The wolves and cats rotate to watch players). Eventually they suffocate and disappear making it appear like the issue is still out there.

migrated

I still have this problem in 1.6.2, and it appears others might as well (relevant corroborating forum links below).

Here's my breakdown of the issue: Ocelots who are tamed stay forever, but any cats that are bred from those tamed Ocelots always despawn (some time after leaving the area, but not usually on server reset).

How to reproduce:

Three cats (who were born from cats who used to be tamed Ocelots, not commands) I bred despawned after:
1. I walked through the nether with one following me.
2. Exit the nether and wait for cat to teleport next to me.
3. Instruct cat to stay.
4. Went back through nether. When I returned after visiting another chunk, I returned through the nether to no cat. This was alone with no other people present on the server.
5. This bug is reproducible even if cat is led on a tether through the nether.

This bug also would seem to affect dogs as well. At first I thought this might be a Bukkit issue, but other server operators running 1.6.2 vanilla confirmed that this is still an issue.
http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1967828-wolfocelot-breeding-glitch-still/

I love Minecraft, but just hate this bug! Since this issue has been marked "resolved," I'll give it a day to see if feedback arises then post as new issue.

Thanks for all your hard work.!
