Having the same issue. For a brief moment I was able to update and it gave me the play button but it didn't want to load. So, I reloaded the launcher and it went back to the same message about having an issue connecting with the servers like nothing happened.
Walking in any which direction while in contact with a block stops one from being able to jump. It has to be a continues walk into the block when attempting to jump for the bug to happen.
