After testing with a newer Paper 1.17.1 build I agree with the posters above. Switched to the latest build 263 and the problem seems gone. No idea if it leads to other problems under the hood though? Running with this for testing now and keeping my backups close. 🙂
I follow Paper development and I have seen nothing indicating that this has been fixed there. Please add some source for the "seems" statement, like which build added the fix.
Our workaround is keeping the affected servers on 1.16.5. It (obviously) works well but without any new features of 1.17. But if the other choice is no server...
I notice, reading these comments that the main feature of the bug is the ability to move villagers either intentionally or accidentally while they sleep. My issue is slightly different: I have watched villagers walking toward their house, stop and lay down, there on the path. I have had them scattered all over the place either flat on the ground or sometimes one block high, but there is no moving them. I have even tried clicking on them to wake them, but reading these comments, they clearly aren't there.
Today I was working in my house, next to the village and a floating body shot thriough the wall and straight through my face... it was very disconcerting.
There also seems to be a bit of freezing, occassionaly all but not always all villagers at the same time. Golems freeze in position too.
1.16 snapshots have introduced a new setting called entity distance which may or may not have patched this bug. See if this bug still occurs in the latest snapshot.
I've noticed that in my redstone world, I have a piston bolt and when I put a lot of minecarts on the first rail and activate the piston bolt, for one it will make a ton of noise, but the minecarts will do this.
I haven't experienced this bug, and I don't even have a graphics card, I use the built in graphics. Maybe it has something to do with the patch for transparent blocks being invisible when looked at through a transparent item, for me and some others, the patch causes lag, maybe for you it causes the screen to flip.
It would be pretty cool possible side effect of fixing this if blocks with enchantments had the enchantment glint when they are placed.
I literally have 1-2 fps at all times while playing this snapshot, I'm not even exaggerating, my f3 screen actually says 1 fps or 2 fps at all times. I hope that a 20w22b comes out today to fix this.
As can be seen from comments above in September 2021 I had this problem with early Paper 1.17.1 builds (and also with Vanilla) and it was fixed by later builds. No problems after that while keeping regularly updated Paper 1.17.1 builds.
Now when testing upgrading a Paper 1.17.1 build 408 to Paper 1.18.1 build 133 (with --forceUpgrade done) the same type of error messages appears again. On server load, on player join and on exploration. It's impossible for me to tell if the decreased server performance is connected to the errors or due to other changes with the upgrade.
