This is a known issue with 1.8 it was evident in Beta and Mojang did not fix it prior to release. They are waiting for 1.9 release to patch it as apparently it is fixed there. What is killing you is you are falling from the top of the world above your original world spawn... You can but down slime blocks or water at the spot so you don't die from fall damage.
On windows 10 version have had this happen twice now. When loading the game I spawn at the top of the world when I know I saved it with me in my house. First time I died. Second time I had a totem of undying so was able to save my life. Has only happened since game updated to 1.8.
I have had this issue happen numerous times in Windows 10 version 1.8.0 on 3 different worlds. All of which have a bed respawn point set and I have never had Experimental Gameplay enabled on any world.
