Attempting to craft books in the current snapshot 17w14a yields no results for the book.
Have summoned in a book using Creative mode hoping to force unlock the book recipe, only for it to unlock a book and quill recipe instead, have done similar with a bookshelf hoping it would unlock the book recipe. No luck.
Sorry that was bad wording, I meant I tried a shape very similar to yours and it did not work. I am aware of the limit.
