You should try forcing an update, that'll help.
Minecraft launcher --> Options --> Force update. Then log in as normal.

(It didn't show up in the 1.4.2 notes, which is what I found annoying - it's a pretty major change)
Roughly translated the title reads:
"Help get the block 31 in the jungle"
or
"Help me get block 31 in the jungle"
31 is various dead saplings/ferns/etc...
Also I don't see this in the 1.4 release notes...(I trust the community in that it's a feature but I wish it was listed).

Why would slimes spawn on the surface? It undermines the rarity.
Yes, it is only in a spawn biome. Therefore it stops being a bug and starts being basically a bit of a complaint...
