Turns out shift clicking affects the way that the chest attaches to other chests.
I hate to be that guy but this comment section is for a reason. If you don't believe that a discussion concerning the reported issue is a valid reason, then the comment section should just be removed/disabled all together. On top of that, some users have no interest in using reddit. That's all I'm going to say on the matter because this discussion really does not belong here but I do believe it had to be said.
The issue is that the repeater still powers the piston below the block in front of it. If you are going to remove the block update, you should also remove the piston being powered. I would consider that an even bigger bug. I don't want it to happen, but if you are going to break your promise, then just rewrite redstone properly and stop beating around the bush. The observers were meant to detect block updates. What block updates are were well understood by people using them. However, it seems you are deadset on confusing everyone for the sake of new players. However, new players are going to confused as much as everyone else because the tutorials they look up will simply no longer be working. We're talking a number of tutorials that were made over many many years. I understand you want consistency but I think what you are doing is making the underlying issue even worse.
After further testing, the observer block still detects powered air blocks. However, it does not output a strong redstone signal, so it does not, itself, power air blocks. I'll have to do more testing when I get off work to determine in the changes meet my satisfaction of being equivalent to a BUD.
The issue is that those are not bugs. That is how Block Update Detectors behave. The observer block is meant to emulate BUDs. Therefore, these new 'fixes' aren't fixes. If this is the intended behavior, then they should be classified as features and the observer block should no longer be advertised as emulating the current BUD style.
What?
The observer blocks are meant to work as your standard block update detectors using budded pistons. The standard block update detector detects these invisible redstone updates.
I do agree that this block will change how people use redstone but that is not necessarily a bad thing. It can be used to make certain redstone components smaller. It will also enable more complex components. But it does come at an extra cost. In my opinion, that cost should be a bit more. But with all that said, before this update in my vanilla world, I use hoppers to remote load chunks and instant redstone in combination with an enderporter to teleport thousands of blocks instantly.
In conclusion, I believe that the current state of the observer block helps to evolve redstone into something better but should be a bit more costly. I believe that it should cost at least 2 or more redstone to craft it. perhaps a block of redstone.
EDIT: Didn't realize it already takes 2 redstone to craft when I wrote this post.
Can we just pretend I am not an idiot? Dispensers don't put items in chests. droppers do that...
Nevermind. I'm an idiot. I tried placing a shulker box in a shulker box with a dispenser. Obviously that's not supposed to work. Sorry.
They are actually entities but I am curious as to what they did to "resolve" the bug report. I suppose I could be wrong. But I do believe that they are just reusing the original shulker entity.
There is already instant wire in minecraft that is a lot cheaper to create.
I have a feeling that this is intended behavior. What else did you expect should happen? It's curse of binding. It's what it does. Map makers may include this in their maps, if they do, they have the right to do so and you have the right to not play their maps. Also, survival does not offer a way to get anything with the unbreakable tag. Meaning that for what ever reason, you decided to go into creative, add binding and unbreaking and put it on. I'm sorry, but this is really a non issue.
Shouldn't the status be "Resolved" only if the original post has been resolved? I only ask because this bug obviously isn't resolved. Unless my bug report has indeed been resolved in witch case, the reports before mine should be marked as resolved as well. Either way, if the issue hasn't been resolved in the next update, I will reopen this issue as it would not have been resolved.

While yes, it is a bug, it is a bug that just about no player has experienced unless they intended to experience it. Do I think it should have been fixed? More or less. I do understand fixing bugs but leaving them in a game for so long as unintended features and then removing them without adding anything to take their place is irresponsible and disrespectful to those that use it.
Maybe the real bug is that TNT explosions don't drop an item for every block that they destroy. Before the days of item grouping, I could understand this. But maybe it's time to improve features as you improve performance.
