I, too, have noticed a difference in performance between 1.6.4 and 1.7.2. In version 1.7.2, I'm experiencing a low frame rate and jerkiness. My rig has a 3-core AMD processor with an Nvidia 6800GS, 4GB RAM, Windows 8. I tried the following things with no improvement: -Updated Nvidia drivers to Geforce 307.74 -Updated Java to the latest revision -Completely cleaned-out all files under appdata%\.minecraft – except for saved games.
When I run version 1.6.4, I see fairly fluid movement with fps ranging between 40-60. When I run in version 1.7.2, the movement lags and fps is unstable, 26fps max. Movement is jerky when walking – even after minimizing graphics settings (i.e. decreased particles and chunks)
