Update: after further testing in the overworld, it seems that if a pearl is thrown to the edge of the simulation distance, it will lose all momentum and simply fall to the ground at that point. However, in the end, that point is likely to be the void for long distance throws. The result of this is a pearl which never lands. This is gamebreaking in that the pearl does not land in the place the player aims but rather at the edge of their simulation chunks.
