Can confirm. Was using other chests. While I could open the bottom layer of chests, the golem was unable to.

Can also confirm. It does seem to work if you give the copper golem 2 blocks of air above its head. Also seems to affect destination chests.

From my testing, you don’t even need to put chests outside the enclosed area. Just put them on top of the first set of chests.
