The original behaviour, from 14w30c and older, is consistent with the crafting recipe for zooming out maps, and is well understood by the community. I vote for reverting back to that, OR to change the recipe for zooming, to one map and three papers in a square, where the position of the papers in relation to the map indicate in what direction it should be zoomed out.
