I have a similar issue. IPad Pro playing Realms. When I log into the Realm it is always in Creative even if I have changed this to Survival in the World menu. I can force it to switch to Survival in game with commands just not how it use to work.
I was already using the official Minecraft launcher, the URL I provided above is the 'Git Clone URL' of the official launcher.
I tried changing the Xbox privacy settings and now I could see chat messages of other players but still not write chat messages.
I updated the launcher and now it works.
Even if it didn't work until I updated the launcher, I think the problem were the Xbox privacy settings as I set most of them to be blocked when I created the Account.
