MCPE-7852 <World> can't be opened Fixed

Comments

Joey Hollis.
After over 2 years of Mojang failing to fix this bug, we gave up with it. As a professional software engineer, I find it shocking that a company would not bother to get to the cause of the problem and fix it within that time.
Every time a so-called "fix" was released, it failed to work.
The Forum was full of people complaining about the problem, and even listed which models of tablet it didn't work on, but nobody at Mojang seemed to make the effort to obtain such a device to try it out.
Would it have been so difficult to buy a $42 tablet to investigate why it was failing? That's exactly what my company would do.
I even volunteered to run a special debug version that logged what was happening on my tablet, but nobody at Mojang took up that offer. Again, that's something else that professional companies would do.

And in answer to your question... Yes, I have tried it on other devices - one f which is identical in appearance to the one on which it fails (but has a quad-core CPU compared with a dual-core).
It also ran fine for about 2 years on my generic Android phone, until the last update, when after a couple of minutes it just randomly crashes back to Android with no messages, so I've uninstalled it from there now.

What really p*sses me off about it is that Mojang have been adding more and more functionality to the program without first making it stable enough to run on all hardware that it claims to support.
Get your act in gear. Forget trying to make it like the console version. Get it running properly first.

After years of not getting a resolution on this for my son's tablet, I now find that the latest version crashes on my phone, on which it has run without trouble for 2 years until now.
So, we have now written Mojang and Microsoft off as totally incompetent software developers who know only how to take peoples' money and run.

We have uninstalled the app from all of our devices, because it is just a big pile of crap.

Nearly 2 years since I reported this.

How do I get my money back?
The software is not fit for purpose.

Random Brown - That looks like a different problem.

This issue is about not being able to create a world, but you say you can create them.
The program doesn't crash when we can't create the world - we just get an error message.

Raise a new issue.

Just tried it on 0.14.1.
Still no luck. World cannot be opened.

Although we can connect to worlds on other devices, my 8-year old son has now given up with MCPE and has begun telling his friends what a load of rubbish it is because in the 16 months he's had it, he hasn't been able to play it standalone. He wants to know why Mojang keep working on adding new features but don't bother getting the basic game working properly.

Just tried 0.14 on my son's tablet.

It still fails with the same message.

Is this a record for a bug? It's now been 15 months without a fix.

Related issues marked as "Cannot Reproduce"

If you can't reproduce it, why not build us a special version with some debug logging in it? I'd happily run that and send the log back to you.
I'm a professional software developer. That's what I do when I work on an issue I can't reproduce.

I am a Beta tester, so I get more updates and still nothing works.

I haven't tried a pre 0.9 version because I don't know how to get one. I only ever see the latest version on Google Play. No point in asking if I've tried an earlier version without telling me how to get one, is there?

Reproduced from MCPE-7852 (which was closed, even though it didn't fix the problem)

Fresh install of MCPE 0.10.4 on an Android tablet. Starts up ok. Click Play and then New. Enter details of World and click Create World!
Message displayed: "My World" can't be opened.
Tried every possible combination of settings but makes no difference.
Tried on similar tablet and it works ok. Examined tablet storage by connecting to a PC.
Looked in \games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds
All the worlds that we tried to create had folders containing files.
However, none of these worlds are listed in the game when Play is clicked.
Did same on other tablet and noticed that there were more files in each created world.
Copied some of these worlds to the non-working tablet. Started MCPE and clicked Play. Now shows the copied worlds in the list. Selected a world but still got the "My World" can't be opened message.
Ran PocketMine server on my PC. Both tablets show the server world in the list and when selected, they both connect and work as expected.
Issue appears to be in creating/loading local worlds.

Both tablets are running Android KitKat 4.4.2 and the same version of MCPE (v0.10.4 alpha)

All updates applied as they have been released, and none of them came close to fixing the problem. Have got 0.13.0 now, and still can't open worlds.

See the related JIRA, https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MCPE-7852 for more details about this issue.

Resolved? Cannot reproduce?

This bug was raised almost a year ago and you've given up trying?

I'm sure you'll delete this comment, but it's not going to stop me from posting about it on social networks.

The device is a 7" tablet running Android KitKat.
It is a Chimp Electronics Ltd tablet (I suspect it's a generic Allwinner tablet that they have re-packaged)
It is very similar to this one:
http://www.chimpelectronics.com/children-s-android-tablet.html

I have another tablet on which MCPE runs perfectly.
It looks physically identical to the first one and has a very similar specification, but was not supplied by Chimp.

My son is really unhappy about this. He received the tablet for Christmas last year and has been waiting for the fix for the last 10 months. As a professional software developer myself, I find it ridiculous that it still hasn't been fixed after all this time.

1) Cannot open any world created on this tablet, and they don't appear in the list of available worlds.
Folders for these worlds are created, but not fully populated. as I wrote in the description above.
2) Worlds copied from another (working) tablet appear in the available worlds list, but still can't be opened.
3) CAN open worlds via wi-fi that are running on another tablet. Not very convenient when you're on your own.

Updated to 0.12.2 alpha and it still doesn't work.
"My World can't be opened" as before.

I don't know if this makes a difference, but I think the tablet that we have on which MCPE doesn't work has been rooted. It was supplied from new like that, which seems a little odd for a tablet marketed for children.

Installed 0.11.0 alpha build 5.
Experiencing the same issue.

Copied in a world from another Android tablet on which MCPE works ok.
World appears in list (unlike locally created worlds)
When selected, Building world, Generating terrain message is displayed. (Didn't get this in 0.10.4 or 0.10.5)
Then "My world" can't be opened.

Therefore, not fixed in 0.11.0 alpha build 5.
