My friend and I both have Nintendo Switches running v1.8.0.
When inviting a friend to my world, they get an "unable to connect to world" error message. I also get this error when accepting their invitation to join their world. The same error message is shown if I manually click "join" on my friend rather than use an invitation.
We have both tried restarting our switches as we read that this may fix it but sadly it did not.
We can both join the public servers but of course, we are not together when we do this.
