Just wanted to add that a "10% difference in FPS" doesn't fully capture the severity of this performance defect. The animation ticking is single handedly responsible for huge inconsistency in frame times and leads to a massive amount of micro-stuttering. I typically run around 144fps with frame times around 7ms, but ticking all the animated textures can increase frame times to 25-30ms in my game. The aforementioned VanillaFix fixes this entirely.

Increasing render distance (yes, increasing) seems to lessen the effect of the lag spike. My uneducated guess is that the client is doing some very taxing lighting calculations and by increasing the render distance it's doing those same calculations but spread out over a longer period of time instead of all at once bringing your fps to a halt.

I can confirm this is still happening in 1.12.2 and 18w19b. When entering the Nether game halts for about 5-10 seconds before returning to normal. I attached 2 logs but if you need different information please let me know how I can assist.

Seems to only push you through the floor when the chunk containing the destination is not loaded before entering the gateway.

Edit: Also found to work with glass panes, stairs (not slabs), cobble walls, fences, fence gates, Shulker Boxes, chests and carpet, as well as many other similar blocks.
