I have had this problem over the last few days. Yesterday I updated Java and uninstalled the earlier versions which fixed the issue. Today (evening), the same thing is happening. No new Java update available. Computer restart does not help. I've had a few servers previously and opted for realms for a "just works" experience.
After 10 more mins of waiting I could attempt to connect to my realm, but the connection times out. My guess is that post Christmas the servers are too busy.
