Yes, I’m still having this issue. I’ve since upgraded to an iPhone 12 Pro Max and it hasn’t helped. It says to check my internet connection. After about 5 or 6 attempts I am able to connect. Infrequently it will stay on the purple loading screen for an inordinate amount of time and say that it failed to connect.
In addition, during loading the app will randomly crash and I’ll have to restart the process again.
