Same problem here. Minecraft purchased two days ago, and not working on iPad Pro 9.5 and iPhone 6s.
Connecting the iPad wifi to a personal hotspot shared from an iPhone worked fine. Thanks for the workaround! Worked on the iPhone as well from another iPhone. Lucky we got a couple iOS devices in the family!
