It did work for like a minute then it stopped. It had to be something specific on that windows install as It was still bridging the connection to the vm. I tried everything I could think of: I placed the ip in the dmz, I turned off the windows firewall, I manually set different dns servers. Im still not sure what the issue was as after the clean install of windows everything is working.

Last night I did a clean install of windows 10 and everything seems to be working now. I have no idea what caused the issue.

I've done some more messing around and it seems to be specific to this machine as I was able to use my laptop as a server/client fine. I was also able to connect as a client from this machine as well which is weird. Next step I guess is to do a clean os install on this machine see if that helps if not its likely down to the network adapter/driver issue I would guess. Also to answer IonicEcko questions I'm on a very simple network no dns blackholes or filtering.

Spoke to soon. After restarting the server Im having the same issue.

The Linux server is working for me. I have it running in a virtualbox ubuntu vm.

I have tried both with the same result. I'm going to try throwing up a Linux server this weekend to see if that works.

I'm still having issues. I have tried connecting via same device and different devices same result. All devices are on the same network. I have attached my wireshark scan.
