Okay, so via some completely unscientific testing I've got my two cents to add to this issue.
So, out of my friends, I'm one of the only ones who uses a skin that's 64x64, two of them use ones that are 64x32. It seems that whenever I approached them using a custom skin with a size of 64x64 that I would either swich to one of theirs or they would switch to mine. This also happens to another friend who uses a 64x64 skin, but i'm not sure of the exact pattern with his as he's not been on to test it. One thing to note is that when I downsized my skin down to 64x32 and approached the friends who were using the 64x32 skins it didn't switch in any way unlike when I used a 64x64 skin, where I'd always switch when I got in the vicinity of them. This makes me think that perhaps the skin switching and the usage of 64x64 skins are related in some way.
I don't know if this is the case for other people though.
19/2 edit: It also happened using a 64x32 skin now, although this is the first time it's happened
