I am experiencing this in 1.9. Relogging into the server, restarting the client, nothing seems to work. Edit: Was not an issue with specific chests, the textures as a whole were not loaded, IE, blank squares for chests in inventory.
I tried loading a resource pack. Minecraft crashed, I restarted it with more memory, and the issue was gone. Removed the pack and it was still fine.
