From past versions player armor UI is not view-able in the Horse's UI. This was intended, Therefore it would make sense in future versions it would still not be view-able now, however it may still be subject to change.

my apologizes by down grading to 1.7.9 from 14w17a will cause the item ids to change by system and will prevent the problem of the crash however with the id's change everything item wise will be lost but cause your world to be playable again. pop i wish you luck and make a copy beforehand in case they fix it in the official release.

this crash will occur when attempting to give ones self sapling (number) 6 in snapshot 14w17a. also when loading the world will fail to render the non-existent sapling type and will immediately crash, and despite the wiki saying there is no type 6 it will attempt to "give" it and in turn crash.
