Solved this issue on PC Windows 10 following these steps:

1. signed out of xbox live
2. restarted computer
3. signed back in to xbox live.
(not sure if steps 1-3 mattered in this solve, was on the phone with microsoft help desk).

4. repurchased realm subscription from within minecraft(which is what I did previously)
5. Realm worked
6. Microsoft tech refunded first subscription purchase

– I have no idea why it works now vs it not working previously.  My best guess is the update at 1.16 had a bug that is persistent until either you sign out/in or just didn't hook in the previous subscription when the issue was there and they fixed it at some point within the last 30 days.
