I tried several of the suggestions in this thread, but to me they all seem like descriptions of doing something that takes a little bit of time, and then the error incidentally went away after some time had passed.
For me what finally did the trick was to switch my laptop off of Wifi over to a tethered 4g connection from my phone. Once I had loaded the list of realms servers, I could switch back to Wifi again, and connect without problems.
